The Only Analytics Tools Adult Creators Can Safely Use on Their Website

Google Analytics creates legal exposure for adult creator websites.

This isn’t a hypothetical concern. The Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) has been used in lawsuits against adult content websites that use Google Analytics alongside video content. The legal theory: Google Analytics transmits data about users’ video viewing behaviour to Google, which constitutes an unauthorised disclosure of video rental and purchase records under the VPPA.

Several adult websites have faced litigation under this theory. The settlements are expensive. The legal fees to defend are expensive. And the risk is entirely avoidable.

The solution is not to stop tracking your website analytics. It’s to use analytics tools that don’t create this exposure.

Why Google Analytics Is Problematic for Adult Creator Sites

Google Analytics works by loading a tracking script on your website that sends user behaviour data, page views, session duration, referral sources, events, to Google’s servers. Google then provides you with reporting dashboards.

The legal problem is the "sends data to Google" part. Under the VPPA, disclosing information that identifies a person and connects them to specific video content they watched or purchased, to any third party, without consent creates liability. Google Analytics, by its nature, transmits this data to Google, who is indisputably a third party.

GDPR and UK GDPR create additional exposure: Google Analytics involves international data transfers to US servers, requires user consent under EU law, and has been the subject of enforcement actions by EU data protection authorities.

For an adult creator website with video content and a paying subscriber base, continuing to use Google Analytics is a liability that offers no unique benefit over safer alternatives.

Privacy-First Analytics Alternatives

Both alternatives below are purpose-built for privacy compliance, work without cookies (eliminating most consent banner requirements), and do not create VPPA or GDPR exposure. Both are also meaningfully simpler to use than Google Analytics.

Plausible Analytics

Plausible is a lightweight, open-source analytics platform that collects only the data you need: page views, referral sources, top pages, unique visitors, and device information. No cookies, no personal data, no cross-site tracking, no data sharing with third parties.

It’s GDPR-compliant by default, no consent banner required for EU visitors because no personal data is collected. It doesn’t transmit data to third parties, eliminating VPPA exposure. It also doesn’t slow down your site with heavy tracking scripts.

The dashboard is intentionally simple, all key metrics visible on one screen. If you found Google Analytics overwhelming, Plausible is the opposite. Monthly cost starts around $9 for typical creator website traffic volumes.

Fathom Analytics

Fathom is Plausible’s closest alternative, similar privacy philosophy, similar feature set, similar pricing. Both are solid choices; the decision often comes down to preference for UI.

Fathom has been around longer and has a slightly larger feature set for conversion tracking. Plausible has stronger open-source credentials and the option to self-host if you want complete data sovereignty.

Both are significantly better choices for adult creator websites than Google Analytics.

What You Can Track With Privacy-First Analytics

A common concern when switching from Google Analytics is losing visibility. In practice, the data you actually need for running a creator website is available in both Plausible and Fathom:

  • Traffic sources: where visitors are coming from (social, search, direct, referral)
  • Top pages: which pages on your website get the most visits
  • Unique visitor trends: how overall traffic is growing over time
  • Geographic distribution: where your visitors are located
  • Device breakdown: mobile vs. desktop
  • Goal completions: subscription clicks, payment page visits, email sign-up conversions (requires brief setup)
  • Entry and exit pages: where people land and where they leave

What you lose are the more granular behavioural tracking features that Google Analytics offers, detailed funnel analysis, cohort tracking, event-level granularity. For most adult creator websites, these features are more complexity than value. If you need them for a specific reason, a cookieless, self-hosted implementation of Matomo is a privacy-respecting alternative with more advanced features.

How to Switch

Step 1: Sign up for Plausible or Fathom Analytics (both have free trial periods).

Step 2: Add your website domain to the analytics dashboard.

Step 3: Copy the tracking script snippet provided and add it to your WordPress site. The easiest method is a plugin (both Plausible and Fathom have official WordPress plugins) or pasting the snippet into your theme’s header via your site settings.

Step 4: Verify data is flowing by checking the real-time dashboard after adding the script.

Step 5: Remove Google Analytics. In WordPress, this means removing the Google Analytics plugin or removing the GA code from your theme. Also disconnect any Google Analytics integrations in your email or membership platforms.

Total time: Under an hour for most WordPress sites.

What About Search Console?

Google Search Console is separate from Google Analytics and does not create the same legal exposure. It tracks how your website appears in Google search results, impressions, clicks, average position for search queries. This data doesn’t involve user personal data or video viewing behaviour in the VPPA sense.

Keeping Google Search Console while removing Google Analytics is entirely appropriate. The two tools serve different purposes and should be evaluated separately.

The Quick Summary

Remove Google Analytics from your adult creator website. Replace it with Plausible or Fathom Analytics. Keep Google Search Console. The switch takes under an hour, the ongoing cost is minimal, and you eliminate a meaningful legal liability while keeping all the analytics data you actually need.
